The light starts to drop on this California estuary bringing just enough contrast between the evening light and the darkness for me to pause and photograph this Reddish Egret standing in solitude at the edge of the moving water. A westerly wind catches the topside of his crown exposing his roots. A few minutes prior he had been relentlessly pursuing a small school of fish. The look on his face looks disappointing to me, even angry. I wonder will he leave well enough alone and allow the day to move behind him or will he just stand there with a look of regret that he was unable to finish out the day with more?
I watch him until the sun fades into the pacific coast and ask myself, what was he thinking during his moment of pause?
No matter, I know he will return again tomorrow and attempt to meet the day’s quota for his survival.
